“The work must be constructed entirely from purely visual elements. A visual element has no other meaning than itself and therefore the painting has no other meaning than itself” (van Doesburg) Jan Hendriks works with simple shapes and materials in simple rhythmic compositions. Everything that is superfluous may be removed. Simple also means: absence of colour. He works in minimal visual language: a repetition of the same element, sometimes with small shifts or twists. There are no main or secondary issues, no accents. The signature that gradually emerges during the process is simply there and may be there. The result is a strong image of emptiness and stillness, of peace, in a meditative atmosphere. Jan Hendriks was born in Tilburg in 1946. He lives and works in Landsmeer (NH).
