Artist Paul Jansen began his artistic career as a photographer and a certain influence of photography can still be seen in his paintings today. The idiosyncratic compositions and extreme framing that characterize Jansen's cow portraits are a good example of this. Due to the special frames that Jansen paints, the composition in his work is a search for the most interesting residual shapes. These residual shapes are often flat and almost abstract. This is in stark contrast to the very tangible representation of the cow in his work.

The cow has been one of the most important themes in Paul Jansen's work for many years. The artist is particularly fascinated by the wondrous and sometimes absurd forms of this animal, and the unpretentious "being" it radiates.

In contrast to the cattle painters of previous centuries, where the cattle functioned as part or embellishment of the landscape, Paul Jansen places the cow so far in the foreground that there is usually no room for the landscape. Some cow portraits seem almost abstract due to the colour and flatness that Jansen gives to the residual shapes. The head of the cow is also placed in the plane in such a way that this residual shape becomes as interesting as possible. The cows are painted so tangibly that the head of the cow sometimes literally and figuratively protrudes from the frame. The cow comes towards you, really looks at you and often stands in a slightly strange position that you immediately recognise as characteristic and cow-like.
