Tintin and the Blue Lotus is the fifth book in the Tintin series and was published in 1934-1935. The story is a direct sequel to Tintin and the Cigars of the Pharaoh. Before writing this story, Hergé was influenced by the stereotypes of China that were spread throughout Europe. For this story, he first spoke to two Chinese, which helped him break through these stereotypes and begin to see the differences between several Asian countries.

The story follows Tintin and his dog Snowy, who are invited to China in the midst of the Japanese invasion of 1931. There, Tintin uncovers the plots of Japanese spies and exposes a drug-smuggling ring. The characters J.M. Dawson and Chang Chong-Chen make their debut in this story.
