Description

Bernard Aubertin (1934–2015) was a French artist best known for his monochrome red paintings and his involvement in the ZERO movement. Born in Fontenay-aux-Roses, France, he began his career in traditional painting before turning to conceptual and experimental art in the late 1950s. His signature works include the “Tableaux Feu” (Fire Paintings), in which he used fire to scorch and transform the surfaces of canvases, books, and objects—a symbol of both destruction and creation. The use of the color red was central to his work, representing vitality, intensity, and revolution.

Aubertin's connection with the ZERO group brought him into contact with a network of avant-garde artists concerned with light, movement and pure colour. His innovative approach, combining minimalism and performance art, has had a lasting influence on contemporary art.
