Alphons Freijmuth (1940) attended the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Amsterdam between 1963-1964. Today, this versatile artist is active as a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, muralist and ceramist and teaches at the academy in Enschede. Freijmuth is considered part of the New Figuration. This new vision of painting arose after the Second World War from dissatisfaction with the established views on figuration and Expressionism. By abstracting form, the artists of the New Figuration created a completely different visual language.

The current work of Alphons Freijmuth is characterized by the very expressive paint handling. The bright colors are applied to the canvas in a pasty manner and often directly from the tube. His choice of subject concerns figure representations, nudes, portraits and self-portraits. In addition, women occupy an important place in his work. Despite his expressionistic painting style with bright colors, Freijmuth also borrows elements from the work of the De Stijl artists and constructivism (such as color areas and lines that are strongly reminiscent of Mondrian).
