Description

Ger van Elk began his career in the sixties, a period in which he made himself heard through the A-dynamic manifesto, in which he, together with Wim T. Schippers and Bob Wesdorp, advocated the production of works of art in which the personal expression of the artist is in no way revealed. Since then he has worked on a very versatile oeuvre in which he combines various media such as film, photography and painting. Reflection on art history plays an important role in this. Well-known examples are `C´est moi qui fait la musique´ (1973) and the photo work ´The Western Stylemasters´ (1987), in which he gives completely new content to Rembrandt's painting ´the Syndics´. The films that Van Elk made in the seventies have lost none of their topicality and can be regarded as precursors of contemporary video art. Several major exhibitions of his work have been shown in the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, in 1973 and in 1998.
