This work is painted on both sides

Freek van den Berg (1918–2000) was a Dutch painter, often described as the last Dutch Fauvist. His work is characterized by a powerful use of color, expressive brushwork and a preference for landscapes, figures and cityscapes. Although he was largely self-taught, he was taught in his early years by Frits Giltay, among others. He was strongly inspired by French Fauvists such as Kees van Dongen, Matisse and Derain.

In addition to his work as a painter, Van den Berg was also active as an art critic for Het Parool and Vrij Nederland , among others. In 1985 he moved to the village of Veessen on the IJssel, where his work became lighter and calmer in tone, influenced by the river landscape. Freek van den Berg developed a recognizable style that balances between Fauvism, Impressionism and Expressionism, and left behind a colorful oeuvre that is still popular with collectors.
