Théodore Gudin (1802-1880) was a French painter best known for his maritime paintings. He was the first painter to be appointed "Peintre de la Marine", or painter of the French Navy. Gudin made a name for himself with his dramatic depictions of naval battles, ships, and coastal landscapes, often with a romantic flair.

After training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Antoine-Jean Gros, Gudin quickly won acclaim and became a favorite painter of King Louis XVIII. His work was regularly exhibited at the Paris salons, and he received prestigious commissions, including works for the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre.

In addition to his artistic successes, Gudin had a tumultuous personal life and served briefly in the French Navy. His paintings have often been praised for their accuracy and expressive power, making him a leading figure in 19th-century maritime art.
