A powerful and typical Breitner work, depicting a horse at the quay. Painted in oil on panel and provided with a high-quality frame by Gehring/Heijdenrijk. A special and rare detail is the sketch that Breitner has made on the back of the panel — something that is rare and underlines the uniqueness of this work.

Breitner was the painter of Amsterdam city life, 'life on the street', which he boldly and with a broad brush put on canvas. He settled in the capital in 1886 and caused a stir there with the astonishing liberties he allowed himself as a painter. His oeuvre also includes figures, nudes and military subjects, fascinated as he was by horses and their riders. He also made etchings, but Breitner was above all a great impressionist in his watercolours.
