Description

Kees van Bohemen (1928–1985) was an influential Dutch painter and graphic artist, known for his expressive style and vibrant use of colour. Born and trained in The Hague at the Royal Academy of Art (1943–1948), he lived in Paris from 1952 to 1957, where he shared a studio with Corneille and came into contact with members of the Cobra movement

Van Bohemen started with abstract works in black and white, but developed into an artist who combined figuration and abstraction. In the sixties he made an impression with his 'sports paintings' about boxing, cycling and car racing, characterized by dynamism and powerful brushwork .

He is associated with the New Hague School, a post-war art movement that emphasized modernity and expression.
