Description

The Haarlem painter Kees Verwey, who became famous mainly for his watercolours, was a pupil of HF Boot and of the state academy in Amsterdam led by JH Jurres. He painted and watercoloured almost exclusively flowers, portraits and still lifes from his studio, which became famous for its enchanting chaos. Verwey considered his style to be a continuation of the Hague School and the Amsterdam Impressionists who placed 'everything in a transparent light'. He also considered the watercolour to be the medium par excellence of the Impressionists. However, he combined this Impressionism with the colourful Expressionism of the moderns.
