Marinus Adrianus Koekkoek, the second son and pupil of Johannes Hermanus, specialized in landscape painting just like his brother Barend Cornelis. He went to Kleve to study under Barend Cornelis. Marinus Adrianus was highly talented, and his best works show strong similarities to those of his brother. However, there are differences: he usually depicted humans and animals smaller than Barend Cornelis did, which is clearly visible in this work. Additionally, Marinus had a habit of placing powerful trees with wide-spreading foliage in his landscapes, a characteristic that is also present in this painting. All the typical features of Marinus Koekkoek make this work a true masterpiece in both quality and scale.
