Description

Pierre van Soest (1930–2001) was an influential Dutch painter and graphic artist, known for his expressive and abstract artworks. Born in Venlo, Limburg, Van Soest began his artistic journey at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and continued his education at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Here he developed into a versatile modernist with an openness to international art movements such as abstract expressionism.

Van Soest started his career with figurative works, but evolved in the 1960s to a more abstract style. His art is characterized by a daring use of color, form and texture, often with a lively and dynamic appearance. A recurring theme in his work is the interplay between structure and chaos, for which he often drew inspiration from nature and human emotions.

During his career, Van Soest gained respect in both the Netherlands and abroad. His work was exhibited in renowned galleries and museums and is included in many private collections. In addition to paintings, he also created monumental art, such as murals commissioned by government institutions and companies.
